40km/hr zone approved for Balwyn North Village

After years of lobbying for a safer shopping strip the North Balwyn Village Traders Association has had its wish come true with the approval of a 40km/hr speed zone to be installed for the shopping strip.

Kew MP Jess Wilson has been advocating for North Balwyn Traders Association since being elected to parliament in 2022 and has seen the delivery of this very speed reduction change delivered for the village traders and shoppers.

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) completed a review of the speed limits through the North Balwyn Village and endorsed the speed limit reduction to 40 km/h.

The speed limit reduction is a shopping time-based speed limit (7am – 7pm, Monday-Sunday) and will take effect between Aylmer Street and The Moor.

The Department of Transport and Planning Work is under way to design the speed limit changes and associated signage options.

This will include consideration as to the most effective signs to ensure appropriate visibility and consistency, whilst prioritising the delivery of the speed change.

Kew MP Jess Wilson said: “Traders, pedestrians and motorists at Balwyn North Village have a right to feel safe when working, shopping, going to school, crossing the road or just going about their daily business.

“I hope the introduction of this speed reduction will not only help improve road safety, but will also promote foot traffic and support our local small businesses.”

North Balwyn Village Traders Association president Ana Salzano has been tireless in her advocacy on behalf of local small businesses and making constant representations to the Transport Minister and department.
