New and exotic flavours and aromas have arrived at North Balwyn Village to tempt the tastebuds.
Spice Bazaar is the new restaurant located at 68 Doncaster Road, North Balwyn. The restaurant offers a fusion of flavours offering Chinese Uygur cuisine which is known for its blend of flavours that come from the intersection of two distinct culinary traditions. There is a combination of traditional Uygur spices and Chinese cooking techniques.
Owner Elisa Xia was born in Urumqi, which is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the far northwest of China. Ürümqi developed its reputation as a leading cultural and commercial centre during the Qing dynasty in the 19th century.
The Uygur people are a Turkic ethnic group who primarily live in the Xinjiang region of China. Their cuisine is known for its hearty meats, fragrant spices and hearty breads. Spice Bazaar’s menu offers a range of traditional Uygur dishes which include handcrafted noodles, breads and dumplings made at the restaurant.
Her parents, chefs Zhong and Ying Xia had a similar restaurant in Beijing. One of their signature dishes is the lamb barbecue skewers.
Elisa Xia says the restaurant brings the bold flavours and vibrant culture of the Uygur people to the local dining scene in North Balwyn. “Spice Bazaar is the first of its kind in the area, offering a unique and authentic culinary experience,” Elisa says.
“Service is at the centre of our business,” Elisa Xia says.
The restaurant’s interior is decorated in warm hues and intricate patterns, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Uygur people. Guests are welcomed with friendly hospitality and are encouraged to linger over their meals, enjoying the restaurant’s relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Diners are loving the food and its bold flavours, generous portions and welcoming atmosphere. Many diners have expressed an appreciation for the opportunity to explore a cuisine and culture that may be unfamiliar to them.
There’s no doubt Spice Bazaar is becoming a popular destination for foodies and culture enthusiasts alike, offering a delicious and immersive experience of Uygur cuisine and hospitality.
